In Focus: 80th Session of the UN General Assembly
The 80th session of the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA80) opens on 9 September, with the high-level General Debate running from 23 to 27 September under the theme, “Better together: 80 years and more for peace, development and human rights”.
UNGA80 marks the boldest reform in UN history and a defining moment for gender equality, multilateralism, and shared action for sustainable development. UN Women will lead several key events and dialogues to move commitments into action for rights, equality and empowerment of all women and girls.

Why UNGA80 matters for women and girls
With only five years left to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals, and 30 years since the Beijing Declaration and Platform for Action set the blueprint for gender equality, the world faces a clear choice.
There are reasons for hope: more girls are completing school; more women are serving in public office; and more countries have laws addressing domestic violence – leading to lower rates of intimate partner violence. Yet poverty, conflict, climate shocks and a backlash against gender equality are eroding hard-won gains.
At UNGA80, leaders can choose to defend and advance women’s rights – with investments in peace, quality education, the care economy, digital access and safety, and clean energy – to build safer societies, stronger economies and a fairer future for everyone.
